School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2019—20)
Franklin Classical Middle School continues to gain academic success. Franklin students, staff and families will be working hard this year to continue achieving our school vision by following our mission each and every day.
Mission: At Franklin Classical Middle School, an enthusiastic educational community empowers and engages all students every day by using quality instruction within an encouraging, safe and respectful environment.
Franklin is excited to expand our GATE/EXCEL program that runs from 6th -8th grade for ELA and Math. Every classroom has a Chromebook cart so all students have access to technology as well as a computer lab. Franklin offers Long Beach Scholars; higher standards for school uniforms and student planners; a Parent Involvement Policy which includes a Home-School Compact; shared faculty/staff expectations and accountability agreement; and double-block language and math courses for students who need them the most.
Franklin is expanding the elective program to include more STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) classes. We recently added Robotics and Marine Biology in addition to classes in the arts, such as Drams, Band and Orchestra, and Art. In addition, we have class offerings to assist students in reading, math and English language development, such as College and Career Ready English, Math Development, and ELD/iLit. Leadership classes for students include Student Council, Female Leadership Academy, and Male Leadership Academy.
Data analysis continues to drive curriculum and instruction as well as staff development needs. Franklin Classical Middle School has implemented school-wide goals, and departments track data to monitor student progress. The goals and data guide our students and staff towards meeting our shared vision.
A new Fitness Center was added in the spring of 2019 when Franklin was awarded a grant. The grant included training for teachers on fitness and nutrition in order to implement lessons with students. In addition, the Fitness Center received brand new equipment for students to utilize to increase levels of physical fitness.
School Clubs and Sports continue to round out opportunities at Franklin, such as the Step Dance Club, California Junior Scholarship Federation, and Girls Who Code. Middle school sports include: boys' flag football, girls' volleyball, boys' and girls' basketball, boys' and girls' track, and boys' and girls' soccer.
Franklin School is also working on increasing positive school climate through the program Safe and Civil Schools. We believe that everyone is to be treated with respect—students, teachers, parents, administrators, and support personnel. Students are rewarded for following the school's Guidelines for Success. Our hope is that when you walk through the front doors of Franklin Middle School you feel welcome and respected. You see the positive energy of the students as they flow from class to class. You hear people engaged in productive conversations about students and the school and you sense that everyone is doing their best to ensure that students are successful.
Another key area that helps to make our students successful is our involvement in Site-Based Mental Health services from The Family Resource Center, For the Child, and The Guidance Center. Working with these agencies, we are able to help those students who need a little more attention due to differing circumstances. These groups work individually with students and in small groups to help students work through issues that interfere with learning. We also have benefited from the community pulling together to help Franklin students. We have Pathways, providing grief counseling and Passages from Positive Choices, providing Drug and Alcohol Counseling. At various times during the year we have social work and counseling interns helping students. To make a difference we not only look at academic achievement but at the child as a whole.
Franklin Classical Middle School is a dynamic and vital community that is seeking to meet the many challenges we face daily. We realize that instruction and student achievement is paramount. More importantly, we also understand that it is essential that we work with our parents and students. Together we will meet our challenges and celebrate our successes on the pathway toward excellence. We invite you to join us in this effort and look forward to your participation.
