School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2017—18)
Madison students are Catching the Wave to Success! James Madison School is a K-5 elementary school located in a pleasant and supportive neighborhood in the city of Lakewood. We are proud to be designated a California Distinguished School (2000), a Title I Achieving School (2003), and a California Excellence in Arts School. Our school also received the Governor’s Reading Award for two consecutive years.
The school’s mission statement reflects high expectations, belief that all children will learn, and enrichment of the instructional program. Our mission is to provide each student with an education which improves and enriches their academic skills, commensurate with their abilities, so that each student will be empowered with high self-esteem and continuous growth. We foster a school climate that ensures good citizenship and attendance, respect of cultural diversity, and high expectations with community support in the belief that "all children can learn." Teachers use varied and appropriate strategies and materials to meet the needs of all students.
Students have the opportunity to work in our computer lab throughout the school year, on programs that support the school’s curriculum and the learning of computer literacy skills. The Madison lab contains 36 Macintosh Power Mac computers, scanners and printers that are managed by a network. We have been upgrading the computers in the lab and in the classrooms. All rooms are Internet capable.
To promote the development of the "total child", our students participate in art and math enrichment programs, such as, "Meet the Masters" and the "M.I.N.D. Institute". Our highly skilled librarian introduces our students to varied generes of books and coordinates the work in the library to the units of study in the classrooms.
We are involved with businesses and individuals in the community to support student learning and safety. The City of Lakewood and Madison School work closely on several activities during the year. A city safety officer conducts grade level safety assemblies at the beginning of the school year with all students.
