School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2019—20)
Cubberley K-8 is located in the eastern section of Long Beach in a residential community established more than 50 years ago. The student population of about 1,000 students is economically, ethnically, and linguistically diverse. The mission of Cubberley School is to meet the educational needs of a diverse population by providing an academic program that reflects high expectations, community and parental involvement, cultural awareness and pride, and responsible citizenship. We recognize that a quality program requires shared responsibility among students, parents, community, and school staff. Our school believes this shared effort will enable each student to achieve his/her maximum potential and become a responsible, productive citizen.
Cubberley serves students in Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade. Our focus is on Rigor, High School Readiness, and Community Service. Our special programs include Special Education classes for Grades TK-8, a PALS (Pre-GATE) program for students in Grade 1 and 2, a Gifted and Talented Education(GATE) program for qualifying students in grades 3 through 5, and an Accelerated course of study for all middle school general education students. After school, Cubberley offers a Kids’ Club child care program for students in Grades K-5. In addition, several different after school enrichment programs are offered on "Early Thursdays" for elementary students. Homework Help is offered three days a week for Grades 1 - 8, and two after school theater arts enrichment programs are offered for all grades. (TKTC and YATW) Chorus is offered during the school day for all grade leves and instrumental music is offered during the school day for students in Grades 3-8. Middle school electives include Exploratory Art, MESA, Spanish 1-2, Technology, Yearbook, Long Beach Scholars, ASB, Speech and Debate, Global Studies, Robotics, Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Strategies for Success, CCR English, and Math/Algebra Development.
Cubberley was the first school in Long Beach to become a K-8 school. In 1995 Cubberley was recognized as a California Distinguished School and in 1997 was named the first National Blue Ribbon School in the Long Beach Unified School District. In 2002, Cubberley was one of a small select group of schools who received a $5,000 Governor’s Reading Award. In 2019, Cubberley received a $15,000 Performance Incentive Award for School-Wide and Cohort Growth on the SBAC Exam. Cubberley has been recognized as a California Distinguished School three times in the school's history.
Cubberley's School Goals focus on improving student achievement in English Language Arts and Mathematics. We are striving for a 5% gain on the SBAC in ELA and Math and a 10% gain for our lowest performing subgroups. We are also working to improve School Culture and Climate and utilize the CORE Survey as a basis for our goal setting and progress monitoring in this area. Our annual goal is a 1% improvement each year in all areas of the CORE Survey.
